Platte Canyon Meet Results
We had a great meet with Platte Canyon on Saturday. A few swimmers participated in a meet for the first time, many had personal best times, and more qualified for the Ken Caryl Invite and State meets. It was a close meet and we lost by a mere 11 points. Our athletes demonstrated excellent sportsmanship by shaking hands after races and cheering on other athletes. One parent from Platte Canyon stopped by to tell me how friendly the parents on our team are and how much she enjoyed talking with them.
Gator Open
The Gator Open will be conducted as a virtual meet this year. Any swimmer who did not qualify for the Ken Caryl Invitational is eligible to swim events at the Gator Open. We will run the events during our practice time this Wednesday, June 23rd at our home pool. All participating swimmers need to be at the pool by 6:45 am. We will conclude the meet no later than 9:45 am. Please have your athlete sign-up for a maximum of 3 events. Event sign-up closes Monday, June 21st at noon. Swimmers who qualified for the Ken Caryl Invite, even if they do not participate, cannot enter the Gator Open.
Ken Caryl Invitational
We have 49 swimmers that qualified for the Ken Caryl Invite this year! The meet will be held on Friday, June 25th and Saturday, June 26th. For those whose child(ren) qualified please expect to help with a timing shift during their session of the meet.
Movie Night
Movie night is this Monday, June 21st at the James B. Grant (a.k.a Ladybug) Park. Bring your sleeping bags, snacks, flashlights, friends, and family and enjoy a movie under the stars. The movie will be appropriate for all ages. Please ensure that we leave the park clean by picking up your trash and all your belongings before you leave. Thank you in advance!
Gear
We are still waiting for the items that were ordered in mid-May to be delivered. Please know that we have been in contact with Out of Breath and they are working to fulfill the orders. We appreciate your patience.
Virtual Meet June 30 vs Platte Canyon and Bear Creek
This virtual meet will allow the swimmers an additional opportunity for time improvements and qualifying times. Like the Gator Open, we will swim the events during our practice time on June 30th. All team members are eligible to participate. All swimmers will arrive at the Governor’s Ranch pool by 6:45 am, and the meet will conclude no later than 9:45 am. Please note, if you signed up to volunteer for the KC vs GvR virtual meet on June 30th this is that same meet, only our opponents have changed.
Ironman
The Ironman is an award given to all swimmers who legally swim every event in their age-group during the season. To swim an event legally the athlete must not be disqualified during the race. Swimmers do not need to swim every event during the same meet and events can be repeated.
Water World
The annual team trip to Water World is scheduled for July 8th . This is always one of our favorite days of the season. The upper division (11 & older) will have practice on the morning of the 8th, but there will be NO lower division (10 & under) practice that day. The team has a Calypso Club membership that allows us to purchase tickets at a discount. Please watch the homepage of the team website for additional information on this event and details on how to purchase tickets.
Idea of the Week – Win with humility, Lose with grace
Win with humility, lose with grace has been a motto of our team for many years. When we compete, we always compete to win, but it is important how we handle a win or a loss. To win with humility means we exemplify sportsmanship and demonstrate genuine respect for our opponents, while celebrating our accomplishments. Winning with humility helps us focus on being grateful and hardworking, instead of self-centered. Losing with grace keeps us from dwelling on a loss or seeing it as a failure. Losing in competition is simply a chance to learn and grow. Much like winning with humility, it allows us the opportunity to show respect for our opponents. It acknowledges that others have also worked hard for what they have accomplished. Winston Churchill put it well when he said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it’s the courage to continue that counts.” Humility and grace are marks of an excellent athlete.
We are looking forward to a busy week of competition.
